HIMSS 2014 Conference Recap

As you might already know, the annual Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society Conference (HIMSS) is taking place in Chicago this year. The exhibition brings together about 38, 000 healthcare IT professionals every year, and showcases the newest technologies, trends, and solutions in health IT. This year the conference and exhibition will take place from April 12th to 16th.

In anticipation of the upcoming HIMSS conference, let’s take a little time to go over the highlights of last year’s gathering, which attracted an impressive 1,233 exhibitors and 35,500 attendees, and featured over 300 educational sessions.

The keynote address was delivered by Mark Bertolini, President and CEO of Aetna. Mr. Bertolini discussed the “creative destruction” of the healthcare industry. In his comments Mr. Bertolini outlined ways in which our healthcare system is broken, and explained his thoughts on the changes that need to take place in order to improve it. The speaker identified a focus on patient welfare and the treatment of chronic illness as essential for rebuilding the healthcare system.

Taking place shortly before the implementation of Stage 2 of the Meaningful Use EHR incentive program, HIMSS 2014 featured extended discussions of that program, its requirements, and goals. Here the focus was almost exclusively on patients – patient occupancy, patient access, and patient experience. In all aspect of healthcare, attendees agreed, it is important to involve and educate patients. The concept of creating easier access by connecting patients through IT was supported by a growing number of advocates.

Hillary Clinton, former New York Senator and U.S. Secretary of State, gave one of the closing Keynote addresses. Clinton talked about Meaningful Use as a common sense idea that has set off an IT revolution which, in turn, is guiding healthcare in a positive direction.

Another paramount topic at the HIMSS'14 conference was the need to identify patients in dire need of care, and proactively involve them in a course of treatment.
